National CPR/AED Awareness Week
Facts
In just a year 475,000 Americans die in a year from cardiac arrest1. Additionally, more than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of the hospital every year1. Only about 46% of people who experience an out of hospital cardiac arrest get help that they need before help arrives1. If preformed immediately, CPR can double or triple the chance of survival from an out of hospital cardiac arrest1.
Why CPR:

Men Vs. Women
There is research showcasing the difference in men and women as recipients of CPR. In the home they receive CPR similarly, however in public 45% of men received assistance compared to 39% of women1. Additionally, men were 1.23 times more likely to receive bystander CPR in public and their chance of survival was 23% higher when compared to women1.
Nurses Leading the Way
Many nurses and other healthcare professionals have CPR certification, with some going on to further that education and skill set through ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support). Nurses are the largest health care profession in the US, so it comes as no surprise that there are stories every day, like this one of a Nursing Professor from Bloomfield College assisting with CPR on a flight.
Nurses also are leaders of research in resuscitation science. Marion Leary is the Director of Innovation Research, Center for Resuscitation Science at UPENN, and has published a multitude of articles working to improve resuscitation through education of various modalities such as technology, CPR in space and more!
Marion Leary is a strong proponent of communicating science to the public stating that “the only way the general public will understand why science and technology are so vital to our world is if they understand what it is we do and why!” 2
